Background The development and production of ENCs is intended to enhance the safety of navigation. To support the mandation of ECDIS from 2012 there is an even greater need to ensure that ENCs are widely available and to the expected quality standard. The transition from paper to ENCs has highlighted issues around consistency and quality of different countries ENCs. Availability of ENCs in certain areas of the world is also an issue, including in busy sea areas such as Malacca Straits and Singapore Straits, and South Pacific Ocean. To support the international requirement for ENCs, for quality of products (paper and digital) there is a requirement to create a community of practice to communicate issues and share knowledge and best practice, to develop skills and knowledge to ensure the consistency and quality of navigational charts internationally. The JHOD decided to support these important navigational and chart production issues by provision of training opportunities with the support of the NIPPON Foundation. |
