Terms of Reference for JCUFN (provisional translation)

1 The terms of reference determine regulations for secretariat, committee members and establishment of Japanese Committee on Undersea Feature Names (JCUFN), which considers undersea feature names for nautical charts and publications published by Japan Coast Guard and submission to “The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans” (GEBCO), a joint Project of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.(hereinafter referred to as “the Committee”)
2 The Committee is established under the Japan Coast Guard.
3 The Committee shall consider undersea feature names under the delegation of Japan Coast Guard Commandant and reports the results of the Committee to the Commandant.

(1) The Committee members are selected among the academic experts according to the undersea feature names and shall be appointed by Japan Coast Guard Commandant.
(2) The Committee shall normally consist of less than 10 members.
(3) Member of the Committee shall be appointed for an one-year period, on the entrustment date until next March 31st. If a member of the Committee can no longer perform his or her duties for any other cause, the supplement member shall remain the predecessor’s term.
(4) Members shall be re-appointed.
(5) Members are part-time workers.
(6) The Chairperson of the Committee shall be elected from its members.
(7) The Chairperson shall conduct the business of the Committee.
(8) If the Chairperson is absent from the Committee, the member designated in advance by the Chairperson shall act in his or her place.
5 The Committee shall consider undersea feature names to adhere the principles contained in IHO-IOC Publication B-6 “Standardization of Undersea Feature Names”.
6 The general affairs of the Committee are provided by Marine Data Management Division, Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of Japan Coast Guard.
7 In addition to these terms, the Committee shall determine consideration process and other matters which is necessary to manage the Committee.
